Note about schools on map. "The more than 600 schools included on the map have reported/been identified as providing girls’ and women’s health care services at “school-based health centers” on location. Thus, the school serves as a very real option for girls and young women in the area who need healthcare." - Get Your Care

"The alternative centers on this map can, or already do, receive federal funds for women’s health care. As a matter of federal law, no federal funds can be used for abortion. So whether or not they perform abortions is not relevant to whether women can receive quality comprehensive health care at the alternate centers on this map." - Get Your Care

" was created to show that women have real choices when it comes to health care. All across America, thousands of low-cost health centers offer women and their families high-quality health care. The centers here are only the federal-funds eligible facilities – for now. Our team will be updating the interactive maps in coming weeks to include many more low-cost and free community clinics and private women’s health providers who accept Medicaid patients! See what’s available in your state.

The dots represent health care centers which have been identified primarily from two separate lists: Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) and Rural Health Centers (RHC). Federally Qualified Health Centers and Rural Health Centers are health clinics which are federally funded and require a certain set of services. For a more in depth explanation of the required qualifications, and an overview of the similarities and differences between these types of centers, click here." - GetYourCare

Cancer Treatment Centers

Although Cancer Treatment Centers of America developed the Patient Empowerment Medicine model long before we coined the term, it's a concept foreign to most patients.

Although Cancer Treatment Centers of America developed the Patient Empowerment Medicine model long before we coined the term, it's a concept foreign to most patients. That's because it is practiced by only a handful of care providers. The extent to which it is offered is limited to the fields of the healing arts and alternative medicine. There are, to be sure, no other multi-disciplinary cancer centers that have embraced this philosophy of care.

National Foundation for Cancer Research (NFCR)

The National Foundation for Cancer Research (NFCR) was founded in 1973 to support cancer research in the laboratory. NFCR research conducted at both the cellular and molecular levels is leading to better prevention, earlier diagnosis, new treatments and eventually a cure of cancer. By supporting the best ideas of the best minds and by facilitating collaboration among NFCR Project Directors, advances in one field contribute to discoveries in another. This is what NFCR's "Laboratory Without Walls" makes possible.

Information on CT-Scans for Lung Cancer

Check with your doctor on this popular checkup. But we were told these scans are not so simple, using 10-times the radiation needed for a normal scan. This then raises the question , "If no early cancer is detected, just when do you get your next scan and then how many times during your remaining lifetime?"

The American Society of Dermatology Melanoma Skin Lesion Chart

Melanoma kills when gone undetected in its very early stages. PLEASE check with your doctor on how you can visually scan your own body for possible melanoma skin lesions on any part on your body.

Using the chart below, you can begin to sense when something doesn't look right and to make an immediate appointment with your dermatologist. But be sure you request to be fully undressed when visiting. Some doctors may only check where you say you think the problem is located on your skin.

My wife, accidentally finding a dermatologist that unexpectedly had her totally undress, had her life saved, a melanoma discovered in its early stages, her having no idea it was there. They say if you don't develop cancer after five years of discovering a melanoma, all the cancer cells were probably removed from the surgery. This surgery can be extensive, as its objective is to seek out and find any potential migrating cells away from the lesion.

Check your skin every month, especially if you have lived in a sunny climate during your life, or in the mountains.

The mold formed in old pancake, cake, and brownie box mix could kill! - 6/2006

Summary of the E-mail Rumor:

A message with what the email says is a Dear Abby column.  It tells the story of a 14-year-old boy who had a severe reaction to what his mother determined to be pancakes made from an old mix.  The mother found a case on the Internet of a 19-year-old who died after eating out-of-date pancake mix.

The Truth:

This Dear Abby article was published in newspapers in April  There's no indication that Jeanne Phillips, who writes Dear Abby, authenticated the story, but if it is true, it may be describing an allergic reaction such as to mold, which could have developed in the pancake mix.  If so, it's not a condition uniquely associated with pancake mixes but one that could develop in many foods.

The woman in the article refers to a 19-year-old who died from eating pancakes from an outdated mix. That is probably in reference to a report from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Forensic Section Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston.

It tells of an anaphylactic reaction in a 19-year-old who was known to have allergic reactions to a variety of substances.  He and his friends ate some pancakes made from a mix that had been opened and sitting on a shelf for approximately 2 years.  Two of the friends stopped eating the pancakes because they didn't like the taste.  The 19-year-old continued eating, started experiencing shortness of breath, and later died at a nearby clinic.
